Linux Advanced Application Server

Objective:

This is a server aiming to run and mirror advanced public-domain software or freeware to be used by staff and students of The Open University of Hong Kong for research and learning purpose. We have spent some time trying different software and the following should be good enough for advanced users.

Linux: Red Hat 4.2

Linux is a free Unix Operating System available on different hardware platforms including PC-compatible machines. Red Hat is one distribution of Linux. Red Hat is easy to install. Security fixes are provided promptly.
Apache 1.2.4

This server is running Apache

The most popular free web server. Response is fast and easy to install. Highly configurable but needs some time to make it work the way you want.
PostgreSQL 6.0/6.2 An object-relational and extensible database including SQL for query. Powerful, easy to compile and install.
pg95perl5 1.4 Perl module providing interface to PostgreSQL. Since PostgreSQL was called Postgres95, it uses "pg95". Easy to compile and install.
CGI 2.36 Perl module to facilitate writing of CGI scripts. Easy to compile and install.
Analog 2.11 Web log analysis program written in C. Run fast and provide a lot of options. Easy to compile.
Harvest 1.4

Harvest 1.5 (unofficial)

Internet and local information extraction and search system. Powerful and customizable.

Wget 1.4.5 GNU Web and ftp mirroring program. Robust and powerful. Can mirror entire sub-tree.
